The drive from Geneva to Alphaus takes about two hours and fifteen minutes. The train takes the same. One of them lets you watch the Alps arrive through a window while someone else handles the road. We know which one we'd take.
By the final stretch, the landscape does most of the work of getting you into the right frame of mind.
Why the Train
The train from Geneva to the valley below Alphaus is one of the more satisfying rail journeys in Switzerland — which is saying something. The route follows the Rhône for the better part of an hour before the valley narrows and the mountains begin to close in from both sides. By the time you’re in the final stretch, the landscape does most of the work of getting you into the right frame of mind.
In winter, the train also removes all anxiety about road conditions. The mountain roads around the hotel can be slow after heavy snowfall — not dangerous if you’re cautious, but stressful if you’re driving an unfamiliar car and you’re already running late. The train has no such problem.
The Route, Step by Step
From Geneva Cornavin:
Take the direct regional train toward Martigny (departures roughly every 30 minutes). The journey to Sion takes approximately one hour twenty minutes. At Sion, change onto the local mountain line — this part of the journey is about fifty minutes and is the most scenic stretch of the whole trip. Total travel time: approximately two hours fifteen minutes.
From Zurich HB:
The most convenient route is the IC train to Brig via Bern, then the local line south. Total journey time is approximately two hours forty-five minutes. The 10:42 departure from Zurich HB connects cleanly at Visp without a long platform wait — this is the one we typically recommend when guests ask.
Arriving at the valley station:
The hotel is a twelve-minute transfer from the station. We can arrange a pickup with advance notice (48 hours preferred, but we can often manage shorter notice — just email us). Alternatively, a local taxi service is available from the station rank. The taxi journey costs approximately CHF 18–22 depending on the driver.
Booking Your Tickets
Swiss rail tickets are bookable through the SBB website or app — we recommend the app for its live departure boards and seat reservation function, which is useful on the busier Friday evening and Sunday afternoon trains. Book at least three to four days ahead in high season.
If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, the entire journey is covered. The regional section from Sion into the valley is included on the Pass, which surprises some guests who expect mountain railways to be excluded.
One thing Google Maps gets wrong: the scheduled journey times are accurate, but the connection time at Sion can feel tight if you’re unfamiliar with the station. Platform 3 is where the mountain line departs — it’s signed, but the platform is a five-minute walk from the main concourse. Allow for this.
If You’d Rather Drive
We understand. Some guests prefer the flexibility of a car, particularly in summer when the road conditions are straightforward and the drive is genuinely beautiful. A few things worth knowing:
Parking at the hotel is free and covered
Winter tyres are mandatory in the region from November to April — rental cars booked in Switzerland will have them fitted, but check if arriving from France or Italy
The road into the valley from the main route narrows in two places — not difficult, but not comfortable at speed
Google Maps will occasionally suggest an alternate mountain route that cuts about eight minutes off the journey. Do not take it in winter.
Private Transfer
If you’d prefer to be collected from the airport rather than navigate the train, we offer private transfers from both Geneva International and Zurich Airport. The Geneva transfer is approximately two hours by road; Zurich is approximately two hours forty-five. Pricing is available on request — contact the team at stay@alphaus.com with your arrival details.
We ask for 48 hours’ notice where possible, but will always try to accommodate shorter requests if the schedule allows.
Any questions about the journey — timing, connections, winter conditions — the front desk team is happy to help. Email us at stay@alphaus.com or call +41 27 555 0148.
